The Challenge (US)

The literal starting line: five Real World alums pile into an RV in 1998 for a Road Rules style road trip, taking mission orders from a mysterious Mr. Big played by Puck from Real World: San Francisco. There is no host, no eliminations, and no real game, just missions for prizes as the crew rolls between stops. Historically this is Season 1, the first time MTV realized its reality alumni could be recycled into a new show. Watch it as an artifact of the pre-competition era, because it barely resembles what The Challenge becomes.

The 1998 follow-up sets Real World and Road Rules alumni against each other for the first time, two rival RV caravans racing from mission to mission with original Real Worlders Eric Nies and Mark Long presiding. Teams win prizes challenge by challenge rather than playing toward one endgame, so nothing ever feels at stake. Its only real legacy is being the moment the RW versus RR rivalry is born. A time capsule, not a competition.

Challenge 2000 keeps the proto-format rolling: Real World versus Road Rules teams, road-trip missions, points and prizes, and still no eliminations. It is notable mainly for early appearances by people who would stick around, including a young Veronica Portillo at the start of one of the longest careers in franchise history. The stakes stay low from the first mission to the last. Completionists only.

The 2001 edition is more of the early formula, with Real World and Road Rules teams trading missions across another traveling season. The competition DNA is slowly forming, but there are still no eliminations and no endgame worth the name. If you skip all four prehistory seasons you miss nothing the show builds on later. The franchise you actually came for starts in the next era.

The 2004 sequel moves the guys versus girls format to Santa Fe, New Mexico with Jonny Moseley back as host. The cast is enormous and the vote-off structure returns, but the pacing sags and fans widely call the back half forgettable. Familiar faces are everywhere, yet nothing here is required viewing for the seasons ahead. The community ranked it dead last among the main-line seasons of its era.

The Island strands the 2008 cast on Colon Island, Panama with almost no actual challenges: players scrap over keys, vote each other into face-offs, and spend most of the runtime arguing on a beach. It is the franchise's biggest format swing and its most notorious miss, ranked second worst by the community. The cast is strong on paper, with Johnny Bananas, Kenny, Evan, and KellyAnne all present, which only makes the wheel-spinning more frustrating. Skip it unless you want to see how strange the show was willing to get.

The Ruins pits Champions against Challengers in Phuket, Thailand in 2009, with individual bank accounts that make every elimination win personal money. On paper it is one of the strongest formats the show ever ran, and the champs side is stacked with Evan, Kenny, Johnny Bananas, and Susie. In practice the house behavior turns genuinely ugly, with bullying many fans find hard to sit through, which is why it ranks so low despite the stakes. Worth knowing about, hard to recommend.

The 2012 Battle of the Seasons revives the team-by-era concept in Bodrum, Turkey, but with four-person squads drawn almost entirely from newer Real World casts like San Diego, Las Vegas, and Brooklyn. Future regulars including Frank, Zach, and Sarah get their first real showcase, and the closing leg in Namibia is genuinely scenic. Without the established vets, though, most fans found it forgettable, and it sank near the bottom of the community poll. It has defenders; it just does not have urgency.

Battle of the Bloodlines has every player bring a relative to Bodrum, Turkey for the 2015 to 2016 season, competing in vet-and-bloodline pairs with a Berlin leg late on. Bananas plays alongside his cousin Vince and Cara Maria anchors the vet side, but the premise means half the cast are strangers to the audience. The gimmick dilutes the feuds, the history, and the star power people actually watch this show for. The community buried it near the bottom, and most fans say rightly so.

Rivals III sends male-female rival pairs to Huatulco, Mexico in 2016, headlined by Bananas being partnered against his will with Sarah, the era's one genuinely loaded pairing. Most of the other rivalries feel manufactured, and fans soured on a beloved concept being stretched past its limits. The season is remembered mainly for a divisive endgame twist that people still argue about, which is exactly the kind of thing you should not look up in advance. Skippable despite the infamy.

Final Reckoning closes the so-called vendetta trilogy in Hermanus, South Africa in 2018, pairing players with their supposed nemeses and stretching the season to a punishing length. Twists arrive constantly, including eliminated teams secretly sticking around for a way back in, and the endless rug-pulls exhaust more than they thrill. Bananas, Cara Maria, and Kam are all here, but even they cannot carry nineteen episodes of this. Third worst in the community poll and the low point of the gimmick era; skip with confidence.

Total Madness moves the 2020 cast into a Cold War bunker outside Prague, individual format, with one hard rule: nobody reaches the final without winning an elimination and claiming a red skull. That qualification gimmick forces players to volunteer for danger, and in practice it produces repetitive, low-stakes eliminations that fans found a slog. Bananas, CT, Wes, and UK powerhouse Jenny West headline, with the Austrian Alps as the endgame backdrop. IMDb voters liked it far more than the subreddit, which ranked it deep in the bottom ten.

Double Agents is the pandemic-bubble season, filmed in Iceland across 2020 and 2021 with a partner-swapping premise: players compete in pairs, but elimination winners can steal any partner they want, turning loyalty into a currency. CT, Kam, and Leroy headline, and a gold skull requirement again gates the final. It is genuinely strategic on paper and often slow on screen, with bubble restrictions flattening the house drama. The community ranked it low; IMDb voters were kinder.

Spies, Lies & Allies fills a fortress in Vrsar, Croatia in 2021 with veterans paired alongside international reality imports that almost nobody watching had met. The cell-based spy theme reshuffles constantly, the midsection repeats itself for weeks, and the community voted it the worst-ranked season in franchise history. CT and Devin do their best with what is there. Even IMDb's usually generous averages dip for this one; skip it.

Ride or Dies lets every player bring their own partner to Buenos Aires in 2022, best friends, siblings, and exes included, with Bananas teaming with Nany and rivals-turned-allies Tori and Devin running as a pair. The personal stakes are real, but the season runs long and flat, and fans mostly shrugged until a decent closing stretch. It landed in the community's bottom ten alongside the rest of the modern main line. Your time is better spent in the All Stars branch.

Battle for a New Champion puts twenty-four returning players who have never won the show in Pula, Croatia, and asks them to build a prize pot worth up to $500,000 through team, pair, and individual stages. The hook gives the newer generation the house to itself while established champions enter the game as rotating mercenaries, with Michele, Jay, Horacio, Olivia, and Nurys carrying the cast. That reset has room for fresh alliances, but twenty-one episodes stretch a thin roster and repetitive middle far beyond its energy. The old community poll predates it, and its 7.0 IMDb season average ties the lowest mark in the main line. Skip it unless you want every piece of the Era 4 backstory.

A 2010 one-off filmed for MTV's spring break coverage, with teams of college spring breakers coached by Challenge veterans through cheap beachside games. It is a promotional sideshow rather than a real season, and the community scored it accordingly. Nothing here connects to anything in the main line. Curiosity only, even for completionists.

A short 2017 charity special where Challenge champions face professional athletes, with winnings going to each competitor's chosen cause. It is harmless, low-stakes, and completely disconnected from the main game. The community poll registered zero votes either way, which says it all. Watch only if you want to see champs compete with nothing on the line.

The 2017 follow-up swaps pro athletes for celebrities, with champs and stars competing in teams for charity. It is fluff by design, closer to a variety special than a Challenge season. A few familiar champs keep it watchable in the background. Skippable without a second thought.

More celebrity charity fluff in 2018, structurally identical to the first Champs vs. Stars run. The community gave it zero votes in either direction. If you are marathoning the franchise, this is where you save an evening. Nothing carries forward.

The 2022 Argentine edition of the global expansion, competent and almost entirely unwatched by the English-speaking fanbase. In the community poll it received zero votes in either direction, which the legacy page summed up as the whole review. Skip unless you are a completionist with a taste for international formats. It exists; that is the notable part.
